Sleep and ADHD – A Well-known Balancing Act

Unfortunately, having sleep problems is the rule rather than the exception when living with ADHD (Wynchank et al., 2017).  Perhaps you are one of those who find it difficult to unwind in the evenings, with thoughts constantly swirling around and around? Maybe you’ve never been able to establish sleep routines, or your inner restlessness simply prevents your body from relaxing enough to fall asleep. Some consume too much coffee or energy drinks too late in the day. Others are plagued by anxiety and rumination. And how fair is it that when you finally get into the flow of what you’re

A blog post on procrastinating and how to stop. “My brain is like an airport with planes taking off and landing every minute. And I have no one working in my control tower. I get completely exhausted trying to keep things in order and keep up when things change.” – Tove, 17 years old Are

ADHD and Teenage Pregnancies

This week’s blog is a summary of a study from our Swedish research group at Uppsala University and Karolinska Institutet. The study called Association of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder with Teenage Birth Among Women and Girls in Sweden was published in JAMA Netw Open in 2019 and explore if women with ADHD have a higher risk of teenage births than their unaffected peers. ADHD is associated with increased risk taking and negative health related outcomes for both males and females and we know that girls and young women with ADHD have an earlier initiation of sexual activity than non-ADHD females. Also, they

Menopause, Hormones & ADHD

There’s More to Explore! Menopause, a natural phase of life for half of humanity, is marked, from a strict biological standpoint, by declining levels of the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. Years Pass – ADHD Lasts

The (lack of) knowledge about ADHD in the elderly Blog by Lotta Borg Skoglund What’s it like to suddenly, as an adult, realize that you’ve lived your entire life without understanding why certain things always seem to go wrong? Why others consistently misunderstand you, and why you can’t seem to do all the things you know you should do? My latest book, “Years Pass – ADHD Lasts” (Natur and Kultur 2023), describe how it can be to get an ADHD-diangosis as an adult or even aging adult. As in my previous books, this recent book is based on narratives from my

Mental Health and Life Balance According to ADHD 24/7

Blog by Lotta Borg Skoglund About three to nine percent of all children and adults worldwide fulfill the criteria for ADHD.1 Being so prevalent and persistent as ADHD is, you might think that “it can’t be that serious” or that “everyone is likely to have a touch of ADHD these days”. Few things could be further from the truth. The fact is that those individuals who fulfill the criteria for these four letters A, D, H, D will, without a proper diagnosis and adequate support or treatment, have a reduced life expectancy of eight to thirteen years! EIGHT to THIRTEEN

Women Are Not Just Smaller Men!

Lets change the paradigm for female mental, physical and sexual health together! by Lotta Borg Skoglund The male body has been, and still is, the societal and medical norm. But females are not just smaller men. Even though an overwhelming number of girls and women testify to how much their hormones affect how they feel and function in their everyday life there is very little actual, scientific evidence of their experiences. Females have namely been less likely to be included in scientific studies on both physical and psychiatric disorders, generating a substantial knowledge gap between the sexes favoring boys and
