Am I Burned Out or Just Bored?

Are you one of many ADHD women who struggle to stay in the same job over time? One that loses the work passion as soon as you’ve cracked the code and proven yourself worthy. And no longer feel the thrill of being challenged? It’s important to distinguish whether you’re simply bored or on the verge of burnout. This post explores strategies to find balance, prevent burnout and discover sustainable ways to maintain your career satisfaction.

How can you tell if it’s a matter of getting bored or if the constant hunt for challenges is actually leading to burnout? 

Many women with ADHD sacrifice both themselves and their personal lives; just to cope with a regular job or in the pursuit of the kick and validation from achieving “the impossible.

Possible To Change? 

Is there a way to think or act differently? How would it be, for example, if you didn’t do the thing you’ve always done?

What if all of us, talented, driven and loyal women who also get a lot of positives from our careers – could find sustainable strategies? Ways that last over time. That make you not feel the need to jump to the next job out of boredom or take sick leave due to burnout?

Find Other Challenges

One way to think about this is to look at what other challenges you would like to focus on in your life. Things beyond your professional role.

What would you like to explore and develop on a personal or private level? 

Here, we may have to be painfully honest with ourselves. 

Life in the Driver’s Seat

Imagine if you let your job take a backseat for a short period while you explore other aspects of your life.

What happens if you just go there and get the work done? Without the ambition of changing the world or achieving miracles?

This may seem impossible, but once you create more mental space and time in your life other parts of life may become clearer to you. Because when you don’t get constant excitement and kicks from work challenges you can look for them in other areas.

Maybe you also gain a sense of stability and security in your workplace if you don’t constantly challenge yourself. Maybe you start to find more balance between work and life outside of work.

Take the opportunity to explore the fine line between burnout and boredom.

For people with ADHD, these two vastly different states can be strangely hard to distinguish. It could at least be worth exploring if you’re really just bored, or if you’re pushing into burnout. 

And what better time than now to do it, when summer and vacation are slowly coming to an end and work life is beginning again?

Burnout can present as fatigue and an apathetic nature, especially around work responsibilities. It can show up as increased irritability towards your family/friends. Even physical manifestations such as persistent tension/stress headaches and a change in sleep patterns. 

Boredom on the other hand can come with the same empty feeling, but often you feel as though you have the remaining capacity to fill the void. If you determine it’s boredom, you can get curious about what activities (outside of work) may be of interest to you.
